Police are appealing for witnesses as part of an investigation into reports that a woman was raped in Bedford in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The incident happened in Mill Street at approximately 1.15am.

Detective Constable Darren Armitage, from the force’s Emerald team which investigates serious sexual offences, said: “I’m appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident to get in touch with any information at all.

“In particular we’d like to speak to a group of men who were believed to be in the vicinity of the attack at the time it happened as we believe they could be vital witnesses.

“There was a student night in progress at the nearby Empire nightclub so it is possible that there may have been other people in the area who saw or heard something which could help, and if so I’d urge them to get in touch.

“This is an understandably distressing incident for our communities but I’d like to reassure the public that we are pursuing a number of lines of enquiry and thorough investigation is being carried out.

“We also have specially trained officers providing support to the victim.”

One man has been arrested in connection with the incident and has been bailed with conditions pending further enquiries.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Emerald team on 101.
