✔Hundreds of keen runners, walkers and wheelchair users headed to the unsullied road surface of Bedford’s newly-built Western Bypass for a charity fun run.
The sporty fundraisers were able to race along the road ahead of it being open to traffic.
The Western Bypass Challenge also included events for families and children, which four generations of the Staszak family entered.
Head of the Staszak family, George, wore the number 677 and was joined by his daughter Amanda, and son Leon, with their partners, Andrew and Adrianna. Grandchildren Monika and Daniel also took part, with baby Hayden in his pram.
The challenge was organised by The Rotary Club of Bedford to raise money for St John’s Hospice, Moggerhanger, and Rotary Charities.
Sunday’s main run was started by Bedfordshire Lord Lieutenant Helen Nellis.
The Bedford Western Bypass will be opened on April 25 by Bedford Mayor Dave Hodgson. The final works are currently taking place on the road, which will be named The Great Ouse Way.
