Whether it’s in Bedford itself, or across central Befordshire, there is no shortage of top quality places to eat. Not all of these have been awarded the prestigious Michelin Star, but all have been recommended by the guide. Unfortunately Luton and Dunstable aren’t represented.

Plough at Bolnhurst - Michelin say: A charming whitewashed pub with a rustic bar, a modern restaurant, a lovely garden and a bustling atmosphere. Menus change with the seasons but always feature 28-day aged Aberdeenshire steaks, dishes containing Mediterranean ingredients like Sicilian black olives, and a great selection of wines and cheeses.

Paris House at Woburn - Michelin say: A beautiful mock-Tudor house built in Paris and reassembled in an idyllic parkland location; enjoy a drink on the terrace and watch the deer. Dishes reflect the chef’s passion for Asian ingredients and are creative and complex with some challenging flavour combinations. The tasting menus are the way to go.

Eileen’s by Steve Barringer at Ampthill - Michelin say: This sweet little restaurant comprises just eight tables and is named after Steve’s grandmother, who was the inspiration for his career as a chef. Two monthly changing tasting menus feature complex dishes - often with one seasonal ingredient used in several different ways - and flavours are bold and rich.

John O’Gaunt Inn at Sutton - Michelin say: Well-run by experienced owners, this is a cosy, honest village inn with a fire-warmed bar, a smart dining room and delightful gardens overlooking wheat fields. The tried-and-tested menu includes some tasty ‘Crumps Butchers’ steaks.
