His story went global and he has raised nearly £30million for the NHS, which sparked a petition calling for him to be knighted - it now has over 950,000 signatures. Today, the Second World War veteran celebrates his 100th birthday and he has been sent over 125,000 birthday cards from around the world. His fundraising efforts have inspired others to create paintings and drawings of him, pay tribute to him, write poems about him, follow in his footsteps to raise money for the NHS and he has even had a train named after him!
