NOAH and Govia Thameslink Railway have joined forces for the initiative - the Great Sock Appeal - and are encouraging rail commuters at Bedford station to donate.

And on Thursday, December 5, a special collection point will be set up at Bedford station for one day only.

For many of those sleeping on the streets, this simple piece of clothing can make a real difference - and without it many are at great risk of frostbite and trench foot.

Jim O’Connor, chief executive at NOAH, said: “Being homeless means you are exposed to the elements, you get wet, are cold. Dry clothing, especially socks, is vital not only to comfort but survival. Give what you can, and know that you have done a very good thing.”

Steve White, chief operating officer at GTR added: “After speaking to NOAH we learnt how vitally important a new pair of socks really is for keeping feet warm and dry and we are delighted to support them in this work.

"Christmas is a time for giving and all it takes is one pair of socks - less than the price of a coffee - to improve the life of a homeless person this winter.”

Levels of all types of homelessness have tripled nationally since 2010.
