In a club statement posted on Twitter, the Wixams Wanderers Committee said it was aware of the incident and that it was helping Beds Police and Beds Football Association with their investigation.

"But we can say that social media reports of a coach being arrested Saturday am (morning) are incorrect as no arrests were made," it added.

Sergeant Ted Rowland, investigating, said: “We are in contact with the Bedfordshire FA and the Local Authority Designated Officer, to ensure safeguarding of the children involved in this incident, and are looking to establish the circumstances of what happened.
