New deputy speaker appointed for Bedford Borough Council

At the first ever ‘virtual’ Annual Full Council meeting held on Wednesday, Mohammed Nawaz, Labour Councillor for Kempston Central and East was appointed deputy speaker of Bedford Borough Council.

First elected in 2011, Mohammed is now in his third term as a Borough Councillor. He is presently Chair of the Audit & Standards Committee, and also sits on the Pension Fund Committee.

He is a member of Bedfordshire Police & Crime Panel.

Nominating Councillor Nawaz, Councillor Carl Meader, Deputy Labour Group leader, said: “Mohammed has a wonderful ability of listening to people, assessing the situation and taking appropriate action, and guiding them in the right direction. He is more than capable of doing a great job, and will be an excellent representative of Bedford Borough Council.”

Councillor Nawaz said: “I would like to offer my congratulations to Councillor Jane Walker who is Speaker this year.

"I am honoured to have been selected to be Deputy Speaker and look forward to working with her over the coming year.”
