Luton Town hero and prostate cancer survivor Mick Harford to lead out Ampthill vs Cancer team
Former Luton Town striker and prostate cancer survivor Mick Harford will be leading out the Ampthill vs Cancer team to help raise awareness and importance of early detection of the disease.
He is supporting the charity which is funding 250 PSA blood tests for men aged 40 plus at Ampthill Town Football Club on May 3 - a simple test that can help detect prostate cancer early, where survival rates can be as high as 99%.
The testing is being delivered with Beds Prostate Cancer Support Group, with results returned within 48 hours.
Prostate cancer is now the most common cancer in men in the UK, and early detection can make a life-saving difference. The PSA test itself is simple, just a quick blood test, with results returned within 48 hours.

Tests are available at a reduced cost of £12.50 and must be booked in advance, with no walk-in appointments available. The first 100 men who attend will be eligible for a refund on the day.
Bookings are now open and essential via: https://www.mypsatests.org.uk/Events/?cca04356-1064-4794- b593-5022714ba95d Men aged 40 and over are strongly encouraged to book early to secure a place.
Other events include Around the Clock Hairathon for Cancer – a 24-hour event hosted by local salon, Steve Hilliard, which will see stylists working around the clock from 8.30am on Saturday, April 18 to 8.30am on Sunday, April 19, to raise funds for the cause. The event highlights the strength of community support behind Ampthill vs Cancer and the growing number of people and organisations keen to be involved.
And on June 28 Ampthill vs Cancer will return to Ampthill Park building on the success of last year’s inaugural event.
The 5K run and walk will once again welcome participants of all ages and abilities, alongside family-friendly activities including the Golden Hare children’s run and the introduction of a new Mini Hare event for younger children.
The event remains at the heart of the initiative - bringing the community together for a day of reflection, support and fundraising, while continuing to raise vital funds for local charities and community initiatives.
For 2026, Ampthill vs Cancer will be supporting Keech Hospice and MOVE Against Cancer, two organisations making a meaningful difference to people and families affected by cancer across the local area. Press Release ampthillvscancer.co.uk Registered Charity England & Wales No. 1217357 Both charities provide vital support at different stages of the cancer journey - from specialist care and support for families, to helping people stay active and improve their wellbeing during and after treatment.
Funds raised through Ampthill vs Cancer will help support their work locally, alongside the charity’s own growing programme of community initiatives.
“This is a significant moment for Ampthill vs Cancer,” said the charity trustees. “What started as a small idea has become a community movement. Becoming a registered charity allows us to build on that in the right way - ensuring we can continue to make a real difference, both now and in the future.
“But what matters most is what we do with that - turning fundraising into real action that supports people in our community when they need it most.”
The charity remains entirely volunteer-led, supported by local businesses, partners and residents.
