Just six weeks after publication, former Bedfordshire Times reporter Christopher Wilson's wartime mystery set in Buckingham Palace, Stealing The Crown, is riding high in the best-seller charts.

The novel, published under his pseudonym TP Fielden, was number two in the Amazon best-selling Historical Thrillers section at the weekend and has featured prominently in Amazon's Top 100 ever since its publication in August.

Christopher was a reporter for the Times & Citizen's predecessor, the Bedfordshire Times, in the 1960s before beginning a long career as a reporter and columnist in Fleet Street. He is now a respected author and biographer who's often seen on TV commenting on royal affairs.

In 2017, under his pen-name, he brought out the first of a series of retro murder mysteries set in a local newspaper office.

He said: "Although I transposed the setting to Devon, these books - featuring chief reporter and ace sleuth Miss Dimont - are actually a memory of the wonderful time I had working as a reporter in Bedfordshire."

More recently, Mr Wilson has called on his royal expertise to begin a new series of novels, set in Buckingham Palace during the Second World War.

He added: "Murder and mystery are the icing on the cake, but dig deeper and there's a portrait of royal life as it was truly lived during the wartime years behind the palace railings. It took a lot of research, but the books contain many untold tales from that special era."
