The family of a mother and son who died with Covid-19 at Bedford Hospital have set up a fundraising page to show their gratitude to the hospital staff.

The Miah family originally set a target of raising £500, to thank the staff on the hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU) who cared for Mohammed and Akhlatun Miah - the page has already raised £2,205.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Mo said: "The staff at the ICU went above and beyond, we cannot thank them enough for showing compassion, commitment and courage when looking after our loved ones.

"It was, and still is, a really difficult time for us.

"Given the circumstances, putting themselves at risk every day, they could not have done more for our family.

"My mum and brother would have wanted us to do something for the staff to say thank you.

"In the last lockdown they cooked meals and took them to staff at the Royal Free Hospital.

"We actually all spoke about cooking food for NHS staff again but we didn't get a chance, but this is something we can do to say thank you for the care they gave to our family.

"The response to the page has been amazing, people have been so generous, we are really grateful.

"We want the money to go directly to the Intensive Care Unit, but we will have to speak to the hospital to see how it works.

"We want this to be a positive thing, we want to show our appreciation for the staff.

"We have found comfort in the nurses and team who were considerate, kind and showed a great display of empathy to what is a very difficult time for our family."
