Paintings of Turner a focal point in talk by biographer at Bedford School

Author and biographer James Hamilton will give the talk, J M W Turner: Painting is a strange business - making art and money in 19th century Britain, at Bedford School library, De Parys Avenue, on Tuesday, January 26, at 7.30pm. He will be addressing the Bedford Historical Association on the working lives of some of our most celebrated artists, centred around Turner on whom he has also written a biography.

He will investigate the vibrant exchange between culture and business in 19th century Britain, which became a centre for world commerce following the industrial revolution. His latest study is one of a number of books which look at the society of art and science in London from a variety of angles.

A research fellow at the University of Birmingham and curator of many exhibitions, Mr Hamilton also lectured widely and has contributed to radio and television programmes. His visit to Bedford coincides with the exhibition at the Higgins on Turner’s watercolours.
