Prison officer Mark Salisbury is the first successful participant in the Train The Trainer programme run by Autism Bedfordshire.
Mark, who works in the Mental Health Inreach team at HM Prison Bedford, recently delivered Autism Awareness Level 1 training to staff members within the service, following tuition from Autism Beds.
Thanks to Mark, new prisoners are now screened for autistic traits, using the recommended NICE guidelines.
The results show that the percentage of the local prison population with autism may be between 12 and 21 per cent.
The Train the Trainer programme has been devised by Autism Beds, to raise awareness and understanding of autism within organisations in the local community.
Autism awareness trainer Mandy Higgs said: “We are delighted with the commitment and enthusiasm Mark and HMP Bedford have shown in raising awareness and understanding of autism among their staff members.”
