MS centre in Bedford wins funding from housebuilder

McCarthy and Stone, the housebuilder behind the new Harpur Place Retirement Living Plus development in the town, has given the Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire MS Therapy Centre a boost with a £500 donation.

Based at Bradbury House in Bedford, the MS Therapy Centre was set up in 1983 to enable those living with multiple sclerosis to help themselves to manage their condition.

At that time, people were seeking Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), but as the treatment was not available on the NHS, funds were raised to provide HBOT to those who needed it. The centre now provides a much larger range of therapies, including MS nurse provision and physiotherapy, to over 300 people every week.

McCarthy and Stone’s sales executive Sue Harbourne, presented Kay Taylor, chair of the MS Therapy Centre with a cheque for £500, which will help the centre to continue providing therapies to its members. The funds will also contribute to the ongoing upkeep of the centre’s facilities, which now include two hyperbaric oxygen tanks.

Kay said: “We are so grateful to McCarthy and Stone for this financial boost. Donations of this nature ensure we can continue to support our members in so many ways. It is important to us that we can provide therapies at no cost to people living with MS, so McCarthy and Stone’s contribution really makes a difference.”

Currently under construction on High View in Bedford, Harpur Place will eventually comprise a stylish collection of 54 one and two bedroom apartments, exclusively for the over 70s.
