Two men dressed in black and wearing black balaclavas knocked on the elderly man’s door at about 8pm on Thursday (January 7).

Police say they restrained him and demanded money during the incident, in Knotting Green, Melchbourne.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Darren Armitage said: “The victim was badly shaken and shocked, but thankfully not injured as a result of this incident.

“This was a particularly callous act on an elderly victim in his own home. We are committed to finding those responsible and I urge anyone who was in this area at the time to contact me if they saw anything suspicious or has any information relating to this offence.”

A Bedfordshire Police spokesman said enquiries are ongoing and house-to-house visits have been conducted in the area for community reassurance.

He has also advised residents to verify callers’ identity before fully opening the door, and use a door chain.

“If in any doubt that the caller is not there for a legitimate purpose, such as a pre-arranged visit, do not open the door or let the person into your home.

“Handbags, wallets, cash and house or car keys are obvious targets for criminals, so don’t leave them in a prominent position or in view of windows.”

Anyone with information to assist DC Armitage should call 101, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
