An armed robber who was foiled thanks to an off-duty police officer has been sentenced to more than two years in jail.
Ruslan Kirdei, 21, of Conduit Road, Bedford, pleaded guilty to robbery and possessing an offensive weapon in a public place following the incident at Sena Jewellers in Bedford on January 7.
Kirdei entered the jewellers with an iron bar and attacked a man inside. Fortunately, an off-duty police officer witnessed the robbery and was able to arrest him.
He was sentenced to 32 months in prison and ordered to pay a victim surcharge at Luton Crown Court on Friday, May 22. Detective Constable Karl Heywood, who investigated the robbery, said: “We’re delighted that justice has been done and that Kirdei will be locked away for some time to come.
“It’s thanks to the quick-thinking and bravery of our off-duty officer, along with the courage shown by the victim and the shop keeper, that we were able to arrest him and that subsequently justice has been done.”
