Luton skipper acknowledges poorest campaign yet

HONEST Hatters skipper George Pilkington admitted it had been his side’s worst campaign in their three years in the Blue Square Bet Premier after they lost the play-off final 2-1 to York City at Wembley on Sunday, writes Mark Wood.

The inconsolable Town captain said: “Out of all our campaigns this has probably been our weakest one out of the last three years.

“We chased Stevenage hard the first year.

“We just fell a bit short last year on penalties and this year under the new manager we got a bit of momentum going and we felt it was our turn to be honest.

“You try and learn from everything you do in football, nobody has been there and done it all.

“So as an individual you try and learn and remember what this feeling feels like.”

Town had conceded ground to their promotion rivals early on in the season and Pilkington believes it affected his side’s form throughout the campaign.

He’s determined that that cannot happen again as he said: “You sound like you are making excuses but Fleetwood and Stevenage have had two exceptional seasons.

“I think this season we knew from an early stage that we were quite a few points back.

“Maybe that was why our form dipped a bit, because we knew we weren’t going to get there.

“So it’s all swings and roundabouts but the main goal in this division is to win it and go up automatic.

“The play-offs are heartbreaking.

“It’s the third year running and not something you want to be involved in, not this way.”
