Life-changing cube wins Bedford School pupil a national award

Jack Murphy, 15, was awarded the title of Younger Designer of the Year at the Design Museum’s celebration and awards event.

This year’s theme for the national competition was Changing Lives: Travel Migration and Mobility, a theme which encouraged entrants to consider how they might develop design ideas that celebrate movement, transition, or relocation or promote a sense of togetherness and inclusion.

Jack’s ingenious answer to the brief was RESCUBE, a unique interlocking block that not only stores essential survival goods such as rice or water but can also be used as a building block afterwards for construction to build shelters, first aid centres, even schools.

His creative ideas and design sheets impressed the judges at the event on Saturday, March 12, and his ingenious multifunctional design clearly demonstrated a positive impact for changing lives.

Jack was initially shortlisted as just one of 12 pupils from across the country to attend the prestigious event and final prize-giving ceremony for the 14 to 16 age category before being announced as the overall winner on the night.
