Bedford Hospital has invested in the latest scanning equipment and is the only maternity unit in the Bedfordshire are to have it.

The technology can produce high quality 3D stills and moving 4D images of babies inside the womb.

But the experience comes at a cost and, because the scans are not designed to be used for medical purposes, is not available on the NHS.

Bedford’s maternity department is now running private clinics on weekday evenings, when routine NHS scans are not taking place.

It costs £145 for a printed image and a digital images on a USB stick.

Ultrasound superintendent Caroline Byrne said: “This service has been up and running for a number of weeks now and has been excellently received by our expectant parents, who have been delighted with their 3D scans.

“The service is available to any parents-to-be, whether or not they are having their baby at Bedford Hospital. What’s more, unlike private companies in the area, all profit we generate is ploughed back into delivering improvements to our maternity service.”
