Labour’s Penny Fletcher resigns as mayoral candidate for Bedford Borough.

Labour is to select a new mayoral candidate to fight next year’s Bedford Borough election after the resignation of Penny Fletcher.

Mrs Fletcher has stepped down for family and work reasons.

Penny Fletcher said: “It is with regret that I have decided to stand down as Labour’s mayoral candidate for Bedford Borough. I thank those who helped me in the campaign and I wish the future candidate every success.”

Ian Nicholls, Chair of Labour’s Local Campaign Forum for Bedford Borough, said: “We’re sorry to lose Penny as our candidate but we understand her reasons and wish her all the best for the future. We will select her replacement in due course.

“Bedford needs a strong Labour voice at its helm to fulfil our ambitions for a fairer more prosperous borough.”
