Keep up with first aid law

St John Ambulance welcomes the proposals – dubbed ‘Millie’s Law’ - and is now urging childcare providers to ensure they have sufficient training in place to meet the changes in legislation.

From September 1 early years providers must have at least one paediatric first aider available on the premises at all times and a certain number of staff with level 2 and 3 qualifications to fulfil the required ratio of qualified carers per child.

The government plans have received the support of parents Joanne and Dan Thompson, who have been campaigning for a change in the law following the tragic death of their daughter Millie at nursery in 2012.

St John Ambulance runs two day paediatric first aid courses throughout the year. A new one-day emergency paediatric first aid course will start from September 1.

The new courses will be held at the St John Ambulance training centres in Bedford on September 23 and November 10 and in Biggleswade on October 12 and December 8
