Continental cafe culture is coming to Bedford starting next week with La Passeggiata - courtesy of Laura Pottinger, supported by Bedford Creative Arts.
The project running on August 21 and 28, from 5pm to 8pm, is to follow the Italian summer ritual of taking a stroll before dinner, meeting friends at different venues.
Laura said: “The cultural performance of La Passeggiata is one of my favourite things about visiting other European cities so I was keen to bring it home this summer. Like everyone, I get so caught up with work and family that I struggle to see my friends and meeting them for an early evening coffee is a great way to stay in touch and catch up on gossip.”
Take a wander in Bedford Park, stroll down De Parys Avenue - popping into the D’Parys for an ice cream - amble along St Peter’s Street past the new Quarry Theatre, down St Cuthbert’s and along Castle Road to the Puddin’ Club, along the Embankment to La Piazza in St Paul’s Square, on to Harpur Square and up Harpur Street and through the Arcade to Gallone’s or Coffee With Art.
Italians say “Andiamo a fare qualche vasca!”, literally let’s do a few laps and you are invited to put on your best outfit and take a very slow wander on a circular route that takes in a number of Bedford’s brilliant cafes.
Promenaders can join the route at any point and are encouraged to visit some of the many other cafes, bars and restaurants along the way. For the competitive there will be stamps to collect over the two evenings and there may be a few surprise visitors to add excitement.
