Jobless falls across borough


The latest unemployment figures show jobless totals in Bedford borough have fallen.

The Office of National Statistics confirmed the ‘claimant count’ in Bedford has dropped from a total of 4,363 people receiving Job Seekers’ Allowance in February 2013 to a figure of 2,977 in May 2014 – a plunge of 32 per cent between February 2013 and May 2014.

The total number of claimants is the lowest level since 2008 – which also saw the proportion of jobless in Bedford borough decline to 2.9 per cent in May 2014 from 4.1 per cent in May 2013.

More positive news comes from Experian, the global information services company that helps businesses to manage credit risk, published figures showing Bedford town centre’s empty floorspace decreased from 10.7 per cent in 2013 to 9.2 per cent this year – below the national average of 10.6 per cent.
