Historic lane is closed off after motorists using it to avoid roadworks damage verges
A historic lane has been closed to traffic after its grass verges were churned up by motorists using it as a cut through.
Single track lanes Graze Hill and Wood End in upmarket Ravensden was flooded with traffic including HGVs after the nearby B660 was closed from last Thursday for resurfacing works.
Wood End householder Helena Walker said: “It has been horrendous.
“We have had articulated lorries and refuse vehicles meeting cares on a single track road so one has to go on the verge.

“We warned the council that the lane would be used as a shortcut.
“This is one of the most historic lanes in this area and people love walking it. It’s just a lovely place. It’s only four miles from Bedford, there is a nature reserve and everything.”
After complaints were made to Bedford Borough Council, the lane has now been closed to through traffic and is for resident access only.
Helena said the council has pledged to fix the damage to the verges.
“I know it can be put back but it should have never happened and now it is going to cost taxpayer’s money.”
A Bedford Borough Council spokesman said: “There are signs in place diverting the traffic along suitable routes.
“Following concerns raised, we can confirm that additional signing has been placed to advise drivers the lane has been temporarily closed and we have agreed that we will need to rectify any verge damage which may have been caused.”
