High winds hit level crossing

High winds on Monday night into Tuesday have affected a level crossing for the East Coast rail line at Tempsford.

The signaller first raised the alarm on Monday night after he struggled to get the barriers at Station Road at the Bakers Lane junction to indicate to him that they were fully raised.

According to Network Rail, he lowered and raised them a few times to try and fix the problem but could only attempt it a few times as there was a risk that the motor which powers the barriers could have burned out.

In the end the barriers needed to be lifted manually by engineers.

There was some disruption to traffic in the Tuesday morning rush hour as the barriers are now being operated manually until the high winds drop and any repairs can take place

Motorists are being advised to approach the junction with care.
