An appeal to raise £750,000 for charity has been given a huge boost with a donation of £8,000.
The Bedford Hospitals Charity was presented with the money by the Guru Gobind Singh Gurdwara community which has been fundraising to support the Challenge Cancer appeal.
Gurdwara President Gurnam Singh Sucha handed the cheque to charity vice chairman Gordon Beeden during a lunch held at the Gurdwara, in Bedford Road, Kempston.
The President said Sikhs are obliged to help others and give financial support to good causes, in this case in appreciation of the service provided by Bedford Hospital.
The Challenge Cancer appeal will provide additional cancer treatment facilities and equipment at the hospital.
Mr Beeden said: “On behalf of the Bedford Hospitals Charity and the people of Bedford, I would like to thank all members of the Guru Gobind Singh Gurdwara community for their tremendous support.”
In the meantime, the charity has also received substantial donations from the customers of two convenience stores in town.
Gurcharan Singh Rai of Premier Stores and Post Office, on London Road, handed over a cheque for £1,000, while Mrs Gill, of the Premier Store, in Gostwick Road, raised more than £700 by holding a raffle.
