Handbag stolen during distraction burglary in Clapham

Police are appealing for witnesses after an elderly woman had her handbag stolen by a distraction burglar in Clapham.

The man knocked on the door of the victim in Folly Park at about 7pm on Monday, December 29.

He went into the house and sat on the sofa for a few minutes before leaving.

The victim later noticed her handbag containing £160 in cash, a watch and cards was missing. The bag was later recovered from a bin in north Bedfordshire. The contents were missing.

The offender is described as white, in his 20s, 5’6’’, medium build with short dark hair and wearing a black jacket. He was with a second man.

Detective Constable Jason Wheeler, investigating, said: “I would appeal to anyone who saw these two men in the area at the time of the incident to call police.

“I would also remind people to always ask for doorstep callers to provide identification and, if you have any doubt, never let them into your home.”

Anyone with any information should call DC Wheeler on 101, text information to 07786 200011 or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
