The site, surrounded by high fences, houses mostly women who are being held, some for long periods, while waiting to be deported.

The demonstrators, who arrived in coaches from all across the country, marched, chanted and banged pots and pans to ensure the detainees inside could hear them.

Some protestors let off flares while a number carried rainbow flags to highlight the plight of those who fled their home country after being persecuted for their sexuality.
