Flitwick Scout group is the biggest in Bedfordshire

The number of girls wanting to become scouts or beavers in the town has swelled by almost 36 per cent, while general membership has increased by 11 per cent.

This mean the king-size group now has 188 members and 37 volunteers.

“We also have a 14 Young Leaders (boys and girls aged 14 to 18) who are learning and developing skills that will help them to get a qualification and give them skills and knowledge which will help them when applying for university, college or employment,” said a spokesman.

The Flitwick scouts learn numerous skills, including first aid, pioneering, science, kayaking, climbing and camping.

Member Taylor Lock, who is seven, said: “I love being in beavers because we do something different every week. Some weeks we make things, and other weeks we might do some experiments. Sometimes we go for a walk in the woods. I’ve learnt so many things and made lots of friends.”

Parent Lisa Scofield said: “I have a son in scouts and a daughter in Cubs. In the years they have been with the group they have done so many varied activities. They’ve been camping, hiking, crate stacking, learned about different cultures, learnt first aid and have earned several badges. They have also made many new friends.”

Although the Group has increased the number of adult volunteers over the last 12 months, it is always looking for more people to help with a section or to be a trustee.

Adult volunteer Nicky Taylor said, “Being involved as a leader is very rewarding. Watching the young people build self-confidence through encouragement and fun, structured activities is a great boost for all concerned.”
