Bedfordshire Firefighters were battling a haystack blaze in London Lane, Houghton Conquest overnight and were still on site at 9am this morning damping the embers down.
Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service were called at 9.49pm yesterday evening (July 28) to a field fire in London Lane, Houghton Conquest.
When they arrived they found a haystack with an estimated 50 tonnes of baled straw alight as well as the surrounding stubble.
Fire crews from Kempston fought the fire using fire hoses and beaters and called upon the Kempston Water Carrier and Ampthill Rural Water Tenders to keep it supplied with enough water.
Overnight the Ampthill crew were relieved by the Toddington Rural Water Tender and then the Biggleswade Rural Water Tender and the Kempston crew were relieved by a fire crew from Biggleswade.
Police closed the road as safety precaution and the farmer moved another haystack of 50 tonnes of straw that was adjacent to the burning stack.
The incident was closed at 9.04am this morning (July 29) after a re-examination of the scene.
