An Anglian Water spokesperson said: “We are currently working to repair a burst water main on the A603. Unfortunately, for safety reasons we have had to close the Cambridge Road/ Bedford Road (A603) in both directions from the Cardington Cross exit of the A421 to Meadow Lane. Road users in and around Bedford may experience travel disruption and we are very sorry for this.

“Our teams are on site and we are working to repair the main today and to reopen the road before Saturday. We are very sorry for the inconvenience caused and thank customers and road users for their patience.

“Some customers on Priory Lane Business Park and Meadow Lane may be without water or experiencing low pressures. The repair of the pipe itself is expected to be complete later this morning and this will bring everyone back on their normal water supply. We’ve kept the vast majority of customers on water by rerouting the network and keeping it topped up with a series of large tankers.”
