Police have moved to reassure people after a road in Bedford was cordoned off and homes evacuated yesterday (Wednesday).

Officers were called to a ‘concern for welfare’ at around 12pm by medical colleagues at an address in Wellington Court, after a man in his 60s refused entry to the property.

A cordon was put in place while the force worked with Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service and East of England Ambulance Service to bring the incident to a safe resolution.

But a number of homes were evacuated as a precaution and residents were taken to a nearby community centre.

The police said: “We would like to thank the other residents of Wellington Court and the wider community for their ongoing support, patience and resilience.

“There will also be a visible police presence in the area over the coming days to provide reassurance.”
