A 13-yearold from Bedford enjoyed an inspirational five-day adventure including sailing, canoeing, high ropes, cycling, archery and power-kiting at the Essex Outdoors Centre last month, thanks to the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust.
Elena Martin, who finished cancer treatment in June 2013 for acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) at Addenbrooke’s Hospital ,in Cambridge, was joined by 23 other young people from around the UK in recovery from cancer.
Having first sailed with the trust in 2013, Elena said: “I was encouraging another friend to come on this trip and she said if I came, she would too. I came last year and enjoyed it so much I wanted to come back.
“Because everyone’s been through similar experiences, it is easier to talk to them. You understand each other’s situations more than most people.”
Launched in 2003, the aim of the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust is to give young people in recovery from cancer the chance to rebuild their confidence through sailing.
