Making its move to a two-tier education structure, a new schools federation has appointed its first head teacher.
Ruth Wilkes will be taking the helm of Castle Lower and Newnham Middle schools from January. They will become a joint primary and secondary school, taking children from reception right through to GCSEs.
The federation also includes Hazledene Lower School, whose pupils can join Newnham from year 7.
Mrs Wilkes is currently the head of Newnham Middle School and has also been a secondary subject adviser in Buckinghamshire and head of a school improvement service in Bedford.
She said: “I am pleased and honoured to have been appointed. It is with great confidence and mounting excitement that we move forward.
“We have all worked exceptionally hard to create a genuinely ground-breaking vision for education in this part of Bedford.
“We have a magnificent staff team already working hard on developing excellence in both primary and secondary phases and we have had many enquiries from experienced staff locally, keen to join our federation.
“The overwhelmingly positive response from parents also, we believe, demonstrates the true value of the Federation to our children.”
The Borough Council’s decision to support conversion to two-tier education complements the federation.
