Drivers warned of M1 delays near London Luton Airport

Motorists heading for London Luton Airport via the M1 are advised to allow extra time for their journeys over the next 18 months - and be aware of overnight road closures in early March.

Overnight from Tuesday, March 4 to Sunday, March 9, the M1 spur road and A1081 New Airport Way will be closed eastbound towards London Luton Airport between M1 J10 and Capability Green.

This means that between 8pm and 4am traffic will not be able to leave the M1 at Junction 10 and will instead be diverted into Luton town centre and the airport via Junction 11.

During these times traffic will still be able to join the M1 at Junction 10.

The following week, overnight from Monday, March 10 until Wednesday, March 12, the M1 spur road and A1081 New Airport Way will be closed westbound towards the motorway between Capability Green and M1 J10.

This means that between 8pm and 6am traffic will not be able to join the M1 at Junction 10 and will be diverted via Junction 11. Traffic will still be able to leave the M1 at Junction 10 during these times.

Motorists are advised to follow the signed diversion routes and allow extra time for their journeys, particularly when taking early morning flight departures from London Luton Airport between March 4 and 9.

Drivers are additionally notified of a 30mph speed limit, narrow lanes and contraflows throughout the area which also come into effect from 4 March and will continue throughout the 70-week programme.

The restrictions are part of long-awaited major works to improve reliable journey times through M1 J10a.
