The death of an otter which was snared in an illegal trap in a Bedford marina is being investigated by the police.
The otter was discovered entangled in netting atthe Priory Marina by a member of the public on Sunday.
It prompting a joint operation between Bedfordshire Police and the Environment Agency to establish the circumstances of the death.
Otters are designated as European Protected Species (EPS) and it is against the law to damage or destroy an otter breeding site or resting place (holt or couch), or deliberately to capture, kill, injure or disturb an otter.
Sergeant Gary Kidd said: “Crime against wildlife will not be tolerated and we’re committed to working alongside the Environment Agency to ensure that there is no danger posed to the natural habitats of Priory Marina.
“We’re keen to hear from anyone with information about suspicious activity at the location, and would encourage the public to be vigilant in reporting wildlife crime, as in this case.”
