Funding cuts to Bedford Borough Council are even greater than expected putting important local services at risk.
The full extent of cuts by central government have been described as a ‘devastating blow for local services’ by Mayor Dave Hodgson.
Yesterday (Friday) the government revealed that it is slashing the council’s main grant by 29 per cent, from £30.1million to £21.4million for 2016/17.
Until now the council had been working on estimated cuts to funding but the final figure is £3million more than forecast.
Mr Hodgson said: “This funding announcement is a devastating blow for local services.
“We were already forecasting massive cuts which would make the reduction or loss of services unavoidable. But this is even worse.
“After years of fighting successfully to save services lost elsewhere, we are already having to propose cuts we don’t want to make. These further cuts upon already huge cuts are simply leaving us with nowhere to go.”
