A man who punched a woman leaving her on the floor as he snatched her handbag has been jailed.
Daddy Smith, 28, of Juniper Walk, Kempston, was jailed for four years at Luton Crown Court last Wednesday (September 23) after being found guilty of attempted robbery.
The violent attack happened in October last year when the female victim was approached by Smith, who was wearing a hooded top and riding a bike, in Harrowdene Road, Bedford.
He grabbed her handbag before punching her to the ground.
The handbag was recovered when the victim’s son pursued Smith, who then made off in the direction of Jubilee Park.
Smith was arrested and charged by Bedfordshire Police later the same week after he was identified by the victim’s son.
Det Con Andy Boston said: “This was a nasty, violent attack on a defenceless victim who was left extremely shaken by Smith’s abhorrent actions.
“The victim’s son played a crucial part in securing this conviction after he came face to face with Daddy Smith when trying to detain him.
“He was later tracked down and charged thanks to excellent investigative work by our officers.”
Smith’s four year jail term will fun concurrently with a sentence for other offences.
Robbery is one of Bedfordshire Police’s priorities and latest figures show that incidents have dropped by 15 per cent year on year.
