Three Bedfordshire police constables have been served with gross misconduct notices and advised they are under criminal investigation in relation to the circumstances surrounding the death of Karl Brunner on Wednesday 11 May in Bedford town centre.
IPCC investigators are examining their use of force during Mr Brunner’s restraint and the provision of emergency medical care. A post mortem did not identify his cause of death and tests are ongoing.
IPCC Commissioner Mary Cunneen said:
“Following careful consideration of the evidence we have gathered so far, we have now launched a criminal investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mr Brunner’s death.
“The launch of a criminal investigation does not mean that charges will necessarily follow. I would urge people not to speculate about the circumstances of Mr Brunner’s death and await the outcome of our investigation.
“As this is now a criminal investigation, the IPCC is limited in the amount of information which can be released into the public domain. We continue to keep Mr Brunner’s family updated with our progress and our thoughts remain with all of those affected by his death.”
