Police set for the Olympics

BEDFORDSHIRE Police is set to see hundreds of officers take part in policing this summer’s Olympic Games in London, as part of what will be the UK’s largest-ever pre-planned policing operation.

Around 232 individual officers will take part in the scheme from Beds and Herts joint units, with the number per day ranging from 75 to just one. The operation will last 105 days, from June 4 to September 16.

The majority taking part will be beat officers, but there will also be specialists including motorcyclists, firearms and protection officers.

Steve Devine, assistant chief constable for the Beds and Herts joint units, said: “We are delighted to be able to play our part in this ‘once in a lifetime’ event and for those individual officers who are working to support the Games it is an honour to serve.”
