The body, which oversees policing across the county, has had its Level 3 ‘Good’ rating verified by the Audit Commission. This is the highest available grade.

Tony Brown, chairman of Bedfordshire Police Authority’s compliance and risk management committee, said: “In the current difficult financial circumstances Bedfordshire Police Authority, which has one of the smallest budgets for policing in the country, continues to deliver for local residents. This independent assessment places us in the top five in the country in terms of delivering good value for money.

“Every penny counts at the moment and the Audit Commission’s assessment is a just result for a great deal of hard and effective work in using our resources well. This is official confirmation that we are providing good value for money.”
