The officer was in Church Arcade, Bedford, when they spotted two men armed with iron bars trying to rob Sena Jewellers, yesterday.
As the men tried to gain entry to the shop, the officer stepped in and disarmed one of the men, and detained them until back-up arrived.
Bedfordshire Police received an emergency call at 1.14pm and dispatched on-duty officers to the scene.
A spokesman said: “The off-duty officer saw the men and stepped in to intervene. A man, aged 20, was disarmed and apprehended while the other offender managed to escape.”
He added: “During the incident, a 60-year-old man was hit with a bar. An ambulance was called and he was treated by paramedics.”
The raid was carried out during while Bedford was not only busy with lunch time shoppers but also as a mobile police station was parked metres away in the market area, opposite Marks and Spencer.
The police spokesman said the hunt is now on for the second robber and is appealing for information to help the investigation.
