A 39-year-old Bedford man has died from a head injury following a serious night-time assault in the street.
Simon Mushonga was visiting Kettering and was found unconscious in a street close to the town centre at 4.30am on Saturday.
He was rushed to hospital but died on Sunday night.
Two people, one a 16-year-old girl, have been charged in connection with his death.
Mr Mushonga’s family are “shocked and devastated” by what happened, say police.
Family member Eva Runzirwayi has created a poignant Facebook fundraiser called Send Simon Home.
It aims raise £5,000 to lay his body to rest in his native Zimbabwe. Within two days more than £1,200 had been donated.
Eva wrote: “We had no idea how many lives Simon touched and we are so overwhelmed by all the love and support we’ve received during this difficult time. It has been such a difficult time for our family and we continue to pray for strength and courage through it all.”
She added: “The doctors did everything they could. We are so thankful for the NHS staff that looked after Simon in his final moments and we thank you all for your donations. God bless you all.”
A post-mortem examination this week found Mr Mushonga died as a result of a head injury.
Detective Inspector Stuart Hitchon from the East Midlands Major Incident Team said: “Our thoughts and condolences are with Simon’s family at this incredibly difficult time, they are shocked and devastated about what has happened.”
He added: “Two people have been charged in connection with Simon’s death and specialist family liaison officers will continue to support his family throughout the coming months as we move through the criminal justice process.”
This week Aaron Muggleton, 25, from Kettering, appeared before Northampton magistrates charged with murder.
A 16-year-old girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, also appeared before the court charged with manslaughter.
Both have been remanded into custody.
The pair have also been charged with assaulting another man during the same incident. Muggleton has further been charged with possession of cannabis, a Class B drug.
