Champions bring chess trophy back to Bedford after 31 years

The successful sporting year for the 2nd Bedford Boys' Brigade was capped when the team won the National Chess Finals, held in Nottingham.

The company last won the trophy in 1985 and is now returning after a fantastic performance by the three boys, Luke Tresidder, David Redman (captain) and Daniel Shilling, pictured being presented.

The road to the finals started last October with a series of knockout matches, winning through to beat the 1st Ardstraw (NI).

Brigade captain, Allan Tresidder, said: “A great team performance all round, with all the boys winning crucial and close games to pull off this amazing feat.

“The team are next off to compete in the quiz finals in Hamilton and then onto Belfast for the badminton tinals two weeks later. It is unprecedented for an English Boys’ Brigade company to reach three finals, and a tremendous honour to represent our town at these events.”

The team must raise £1,500 to help them get to Ireland. Visit https://mydonate.bt.com/events/badmintonfinals/ (In aid of 2nd Bedford Company Boys Brigade)

Along with the Girls’ Brigade company, the groups are based at All Nations Church, operating at two sites across Bedford, Monday and Friday. For more details contact Allan Tresidder on 01234 319269 or email [email protected]
