Castle wins North Beds Pub of the Year title

The Castle on Newnham Avenue has been named as Pub of the Year by The North Bedfordshire Branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA)

Run by Roland and Kay Keech, the pub was named the Most Improved Pub last year and they have now consolidated their position to claim the top spot. Roger Stokes, chair of the branch, said the choice came after discussing the merits of a number of pubs in the branch area, all of which would have been worthy winners of the award.

The Castle now goes on to the next round where it will be joined by the nominations from the East and South Bedfordshire branches to determine the county winner.

Country Pub of the Year award goes to Alison Brown’s pub, the Fox in Carlton. James and Sally Bolton’s efforts at the Bell in Odell have been recognized with the Most Improved Pub title.

There were two extra awards this year - The RAFA Club on Ashburnham Road has been named Club of the Year while the Polhill Arms on Wilden Road is Renhold picks up the Cider Pub of the Year title. This last award is in response to the increased demand for and availability of real cider, made from fruit juice and not pasteurised or artificially carbonated.
