A depraved babysitter who sexually assaulted the babies and toddlers that he was supposed to be looking after has been jailed for 18 years.
Clint Gilbert, 21, was looked on as a trusted friend by the children’s parents, a court was told.
But he betrayed their trust by carrying out sickening sex assaults on the young boys and girls - and even photographed what he was doing.
Gilbert, who lives in Bedford, committed offences on seven children ranging from babies to five year olds. Some of them he abused while they slept.
One of his victims was a three-month-old baby girl, who he took pictures of as he assaulted her.
At Luton Crown Court yesterday (Wednesday) Judge Barbara Mensah told him “The offences were so gross, so sickening, disgusting and revolting that only a custodial sentence can be justified in this case.”
She told him his behaviour had been “depraved” and that what he had done amounted to a gross breach of trust.
The judge said in some cases the parents of the victims had known Gilbert all his life. One mum had even attended his 21st birthday party.
Now, she said some parents were faced with the appalling dilemma of whether they should tell their child what had happened when they were very young, or say nothing.
The judge said that the parents feared that if they said nothing, it could cause terrible problems between them and their children if the matters came to light years later.
Gilbert pleaded guilty to three offences of sexual assault by penetration on a child under 13, six offences of sexual assault of a child under 13, taking indecent photos of a child, making indecent images of a child, distributing indecent photos of a child, possessing extreme pornography and publishing an obscene article.
Michael Speak prosecuting said Gilbert’s activities were revealed in March of this year after someone with the user name of Clintyboy 93 had been using Skype to speak to a man in the USA discussing child sex and referring to his baby sitting.
It was discovered here in the UK that Clintyboy 93 had sent images across to the person in the USA.
The prosecutor said eventually police were able to establish Clintyboy 93 was the defendant and officers arrested him.
They discovered he had downloaded depraved stills and video clips from the internet of young boys and girls being sexually abused by adults.
When Gilbert was sentenced in court the public gallery was filled with parents and families of the children he had abused.
His name will now go on the sex offenders’ register and he was also made the subject of a sexual harm prevention order prohibiting him from having unsupervised access to under 16s or going to places frequented by children. On his release from prison his internet usage will also be monitored.
Speaking following the case, Det Con Tanya Shotbolt said: “This significant sentence shows the gravity of offences committed by Gilbert. The trauma he inflicted on his victims and their families is despicable and we are pleased that he has received such a long stretch behind bars.
“Nothing can ever undo the harm he has caused however we hope this gives the families some closure.
“I’d urge any victim of sexual offences to contact police. Child safety is a priority for Bedfordshire Police and we are dedicated to thoroughly investigate cases and work hard to bring these individuals to justice.”
