Breaking: Huge fire at Blunham workshop

Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service are attending a serious fire at a workshop in Barford Road, Blunham.

Fire Control received a call at 12.25 about a fire in the vehicle workshop of Chiltern Travel. Due to the presence of acetylene cylinders and fuel oil additional fire appliances have been sent to the site.

At present on-call fire crews from Sandy, Potton and Bedford are on the scene together with their full-time colleagues from Bedford. The Hazardous Material unit from Stopsley, additional water carriers from Kempston and Toddington, the Bedford Aerial platform and the Incident Command Unit from Leighton Buzzard have also been requested to attend.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus to protect themselves from fumes and potential asbestos in the roof of the building have isolated utilities and are removing cylinders from the building. The cylinders are not involved in the fire itself which is being fought with two jets and a ground monitor. The Hazardous Material Unit has been sent to decontaminate Firefighters involved in removing the cylinders.

The incident is still underway.
