Breaking: Firefighters battle estate blaze

More than 80 firefighters are tackling a blaze at an industrial estate near Clophill.

The A6 in the area remains closed as fire crews battle the blaze.

Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service last night (Thursday, 26 May), attended a report of a caravan fire at Four Winds industrial estate, West End, Haynes.

The first call to Service Control was received at 23:15 and upon arrival the initials crews were confronted with a well-developed fire at the commercial premises.

The fire quickly spread to several buildings and due to their contents grew in intensity resulting in crews having to adopt defensive firefighting techniques.

Initial reports indicated that several cylinders, including acetylene were located at the premises and crews took action to prevent the fire from spreading to them.

At the height of the incident over 80 Firefighters from 4 counties attended, with 12 pumps , 2 Aerial Platforms and 4 Water Carriers being used. The Incident Command Unit also attended.

Representatives from the Environment Agency, Water Board and Electricity board

also attended the scene to provide assistance to the Service.

Firefighting operations are still continuing, and good progress has been made incontaining the fire and bringing the incident under control.

Deputy Chief Fire Officer Glen Ranger took command of the incident and said; ”Firefighters have been working in extremely difficult conditions, but have made goodprogress. Many hazards have been encountered throughout the night, however the professionalism of our crews, our neighbouring firefighters and other emergency partners has resulted in the saving of a number of properties. Thanks goes to all personnel including our control staff who mobilised our resources and have been on scene throughout the night”.
