Bedford man named as he faces charges over violent assault

A Bedford man has been charged in connection with a violent assault which left his victim being airlifted to hospital.

Matthew Chand, 36, of St Mary’s Road in Wootton, Bedford, was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of attempt murder after the incident which happened near Cambourne Police Station, Cambridge.

He has since been charged with causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, aggravated vehicle taking, driving while disqualified, driving without insurance, causing actual bodily harm (ABH) and two counts of assaulting a constable in the execution of their duty.

He has been remanded in police custody to appear at Huntingdon Magistrates’ Court this morning (Thursday, March 24).

Officers attended Sackville Way, outside Cambourne Police Station, at around 9.20pm on Tuesday (March 22), after hearing screams in the street.

The victim, a woman in her 40s, suffered serious but not life threatening injuries after being attacked and was airlifted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge where she remains in a stable condition.
