Bedford-born Ronnie Barker is among comedy greats celebrated in a new round of stamps published by Royal Mail to mark April Fool’s Day.
The actor, comedian and writer was born in Bedford and went on to live in Oxford.
Other comedians featured in the new 10 stamp collection are Barker’s sidekick Ronnie Corbett, Norman Wisdom, Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise, Spike Milligan, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, French and Saunders, Monty Python, Victoria Wood, Lenny Henry and Billy Connolly.
Royal Mail also issued a special postmark across the country today (April 1) to mark the stamp set, which celebrates the contribution to the world of entertainment and comedy made by some of the nation’s most cherished performers across the decades since the 1950s.
Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson said: “Bedford is proud to be the birthplace of the great Ronnie Barker, who brought such joy and laughter into people’s homes.
“His inclusion in this new series of stamps is a fitting tribute to the overwhelming, enduring popularity of one of Bedford’s most famous sons.”
The stamps are on sale now and available at www.royalmail.com/comedygreats, by phone on 03457 641 641 and in 8,000 Post Offices across the UK.
