Author and illustrator Chris Riddell was invited to Caudwell School, Bedford, to cut the ribbon with pupils.
Assistant head teacher Dan Wiltshire said the visit was a “fantastic inspiration” for the young students.
He said: “Mr Riddell told the children about what he does and how he got into illustration. He showed them how to do illustrations, and read them one of his books.
“They were full of awe and wonder, and even fell silent for a moment as he was drawing!”

The library has been stocked with new fiction, and factual, texts to inspire reading and support learning.
Mr Wiltshire said: “While children are used to having smart phones and tablets, they still get excited taking a book, as they have now become a novelty.
“Often, when a child develops a love of reading, a lot of that comes down to the illustrations.”
